With any business you will face obsticles and online auctions are no exceptions. Some of the toughest challenges you will have to overcome are the following: auction seller fees, shipping costs and competition.
First, with any good auction website you will have to pay seller fees. Seller fees are what keep the auction site in business. Many new startup auction sites offer free listing fees but won't have the customer base you will need to make a profit or even sell items. It's usually worth paying the seller fees in order to move the products quick and make some profit. The challenge is finding the perfect balance of seller fees and profit. Many people have complained about the rising seller fees associated with eBay but as of yet there hasn't been a competitor strong enough to compete with them!
With any online business another fee will sometimes hinder your product sell price, shipping costs. No matter how you look at it, someone has to pay for shipping costs. You will be out money for boxes and packages and other shipping materials. Shipping costs will be more expensive on larger items than a retail store because they purchas multiple items and ship them at the same time to save on shipping costs. You will have to find creative ways to package and ship to save money.
Competition will be fierce with any online auction website. There may be dozens of merchants trying to sell the same items. When someone searches for the item you will have to make your items stand out in the crowd. You have to make sure that your items actually show up in the search results when someone searches for the item. Be very descriptive with items and post good pictures to entice potential buyers. You have to be on top of your game to beat the competition!
