Strange Auctions
Strange auctions pop up on eBay all the time. At any given moment there are literally over 100,000,000,000,000 items listed on eBay so there are bound to be a few really strange auctions listed. EBay even has a category devoted to the topic of strangeness. So we know they are out there, but what are some of the strangest auctions to have ever appeared on the famous online auction website? I hope to keep adding to this page of strange auctions but I will start with this one.
The $28,000 piece of toast
When you think about items that appreciate in value you probably wouldn't think about a grilled cheese sandwich. Neither did Diane Duyser, from Florida until the Virgin Mary appeared on her meal. Duyser said, "I went to take a bite out of it, and then I saw this lady looking back at me," she said, according to the Chicago Tribune newspaper. "I hollered for him," she said, gesturing to her husband, Greg. "It scared me at first."
Duyser claims she hasn't done anything to preserve the sandwich other than keeping it in a plastic box. The sandwich hasn't crumbled or molded in over 10 years now!
The auction received over 1.7 million hits during its listing period. The auction also caused a chain reaction of other similar items being listed on eBay over the next few years. Do you think the auction was legit? As strange as it might sound, the fact remains that Duyser still walked away with $28,000 from her final auction price!
